What is an editorial?
- An editorial is one of the writing styles used to
express an opinion or reaction to timely news, events or issues of concern.
Most editorials are used to influence readers to think or act the same way the
writer does.
What should be in an editorial?
Remember: your main mission is to present a
persuasive argument to the reader.
- Get to the point.
Your first paragraph should be a short summary of what subject your editorial
will be about.
- State your opinion and support it with facts.
The "fact" component is essential if you want to persuade your reader.
Why would any reader agree with you if you have no facts? For every
opinion you state, you should also state a fact supporting your belief.
- Look for a "hook".
Tell the reader how this issue impacts their lives and their community.
- Be brief.
Minimum: ¾ of a page, hand-written; 1 page typed, double-spaced.
